Discussion:
X axis absolute time and change data file problem

Hi all,

I'm risking asking two issues in a single email. The first is whether there
is a way to show absolute timestamps in the X axis and the second is a
problem with latest KST (binary build) to change (dirfile) data file (works
in 2.0.7)

Hopefully everyone can read the inline images below ..

For the timestamps, instead of the [<offset>] major tick quantities, is
there a way to display absolute values on the major ticks?

For changing data file - in our case dirfile - the dirfile directory is not
recognized as a data source when changing the data file (see image below)

.... but it is recognized when doing a standard open (see image below)

The functionality works in KST 2.0.7

Thanks for any help,

Steve

[Time labels]: Currently, this feature is not supported.  I was worried
that the date/time labels would take up too much room, and the plot axis
would look totally wrong.

If you think it would be useful, can you send me a screenshot from
another app, or even a hand drawn something that shows me what you mean?

[reading dirfiles]: Are you using the file selector in the middle of the
Change Data File Dialog, called "New Data File"?
Can you try entering the file name there manually, rather than using the
file selector dialog, and see if that works?

Let me get some more experience with it. I *do* like the unit transition
from offsets of seconds to offsets of minutes.

Well, a new day (including powerup) and I could not recreate the problem!
I did a fair amount of testing when it failed. Funny. I'll let you know
if I see it again.

Steve,

this has been driving me nuts as well. Sometimes, in particular on mounted NFS drives, the file filter does funny things and wont let me choose the file i want to pick. I have not yet found a pattern. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

If i may, I would suggest an option to change filter to "All files", or even better, remove the filter all together (what is it good for, anyway?).

Mike

I found one relevant pattern to the "can't load dirfiles" issue.

If a *malformed *Dirfile is selected in Data Wizard -> Recent Files
(disabled Next button), then browsing to a dirfile on the filesystem NEVER
works. You must have a *valid *Dirfile selected in Recent Files (I didn't
test with no recent files).

First, still loving kst and using more and more =)

But I found a small issue. Hmm, not sure whether to continue to report
bugs here or on github ... I'll continue here ...

I found an issue related to Data Wizard when browsing for a new data
source. The browser has a 'state' that restricts what it recognizes. If I
recently used an ASCII file, then browsing does not recognize binary
sources (e.g., Dirfile). Conversely, if I recently used a Dirfile, then
browsing does not recognize ASCII sources.

Example of being in ASCII mode, below, which again, won't recognize, won't
recognize Dirfiles.

If I have a "Recent File" of my desired type, I can select it, which
switches the mode to Directory of Binary Files (which recognizes Dirfiles)
