Hi Kst developers & maintainers,

(please cc: kde-extra-***@kde.org or best continue there, I am not subscribed
to ***@kde.org)

we need your feedback and help for doing a proper redirect for the kst page on
the to-be-shutdown site extragear.kde.org, which for consistency with handling
of other former pages on extragear.kde.org and ease of setup would point to
kde.org/applications.

(see old page of kst at extragear.kde.org/apps/kst/, which is listed on
extragear.kde.org)

The plan is to forward to the respective page on the software catalog on
kde.org/applications. Seems kst currently has no such entry there, which is a
shame. So let's create one. Which is were you get into the game :)

Please create a description file for kst using the template at
https://websvn.kde.org/trunk/www/sites/www/applications/apps/template.txt?view=markup
and send it to the kde-***@kde.org mailinglist, so it could be uploaded there
(unless you can even do it yourself). Please also tell which icon (file) to
use as official app icon there.
You can find the description files for other apps as reference at
https://websvn.kde.org/trunk/www/sites/www/applications/apps/

Don't hesitate to ask any questions if you have some.

See below for respective context.

Hello everyone.
This list made his job from years, but now is time to let it go and
assume
this is a thing from the past. As same the aged website.
I'm concerned about the website going away, yes it is *old* but there
are
links going to it and there's visits as piwik shows, what are we going
to
do with it? totally kill it? I think we should make some redirects to
places that make sense at least for app pages
Redirects could be done to the respective app pages below
https://www.kde.org/applications/
which are having similar info.
Not sure all apps have pages there already (e.g. KXStitch is to be found
where? is not in /applications/graphics/ at least), so would be also
good
to fix that while doing so.
Anyone quick up to do that, first
a) add missing pages to kde.org/applications, then
b) adding redirects?
I can do a and b if you like,
That would be great.
<snip>
Most items on the extragear website seem to have proper replacement on
kde.org/applications/.
<snip>
Kst -> has own subdomain https://kst-plot.kde.org/, needs
kde.org/applications entry
Cheers

Hi, Friedrich

The Link extragear.kde.org/apps/kst/ can die, but we would really like to keep
our current page at kst.kde.org (and, it turns out, kst-plot.kde.org). It is
the apps main page, and where we send everyone. Is this possible? I really
don't know how we came to have our own subdomain, but it is nice :-)

We are happy to also have a page at kde.org/applications, and I can send you a
json for it. BUT: these pages seem to be rather limited, and not the main
page of most applications. The existing kde.org/application pages should at
least also link to the application's main page.

For example kstars, which is a reasonably high profile project:

-they have their own page at https://edu.kde.org/kstars/ which appears to
be their main page. It has all the stuff you need, like how to install, etc.

-the page at https://www.kde.org/applications/education/kstars/
doesn't point to it, and seems more like an entry in a list of applications; I
am not sure what the purpose of that page is, except to know that the
application exists. There is no way of knowing how to install the
application, etc.

Anyway, let me know where this is all going.

Thanks!

Sure, that subdomain and similar ones are not going to be touched here, and
can (and should) be used to send people to for a real maintained homepage.

Only extragear.kde.org is going to be put to rest finally here.

should at least also link to the application's main page.
There is a "homepage" entry possible in the JSON description for that purpose.
E.g. used for Marble (who also have their marble.kde.org subdomain):
https://www.kde.org/applications/education/marble

KStar's entry could and should be updated then.

Those pages below kde.org/applications can be considered something like a
catalog of all apps developed in the kde.org community, providing the most
important info on a quick look, with a consistent layout for quick access.
(Agreed that they surely can be improved a little here and there, but that is
a different issue, to be tackled as an independent step).

Cheers

Hi,

any chance you could propose a JSON file with the content you would like to
see for kst?

Hi,

to get the entry for kst on kde.org/applications done I now simply copied some
text from the kst homepage and it is live now

So please check https://www.kde.org/applications/education/kst/ to see where
things need corrections or improvements (screenshot still TODO, going to copy
the one from https://kst-plot.kde.org/, Loading Image...)

("education" is not the perfect fit. But perhaps the best among the current
set of categories. This one-category-per-app hopefully will be improved in the
near future, perhaps by copying the approach used in the app start menus in
the workspace).

Hi Ben,
What's the status of the shutdown in terms of getting everyone migrated out?
On my list only kst still needs to add/get an entry on kde.org/applications,
other than that for all projects which are still alive there are redirect
candidates.

Pinged last Thursday again (see cc: on "Entry for kst on kde.org/
applications"), still hoping for kst devs (cc:ed here again) to compile a JSON
file with content they prefer, instead of me or someone else writing a bogus
one. I propose to wait until March 14th, then proceed without their help.

Cheers
